TO A MOUNTAIN LAKE, by MABEL HALL WALTER First Line: What mighty force tore these great cliffs Last Line: From deadening walls that, soundless, close me in! Alternate Author Name(s): Hall, Sarah Mabel Subject(s): Lakes; Pools; Ponds | ||||||||
What mighty force tore these great cliffs apart And, seeking heaven, thus delivered thee From darkness underneath, Lake Willoughby, And from the restless fires that gnawed thy heart? What ruthless power tossed those massive rocks, Huge boulders, chaff-like, many miles around, In towering furrows plowed the shuddering ground, And harrowed it again with earthquake shocks? O somber lake, thy frowning heights between, Tell me the secret of thy noble peace; When struggle ends, does calm content begin, Do sparkling fountains quench the fires unseen? For oh, my burning spirit seeks release From deadening walls that, soundless, close me in! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A MAN GETS OFF WORK EARLY by THOMAS LUX THE FRIARY AT BLOSSOM, PROLOGUE & INSTRUCTIONS by NORMAN DUBIE SONGS FOR TWO SEASONS: 2.
