AUGUST IN MILL VALLEY, by ELEANOR PRESTON WATKINS First Line: The brook is singing a slumber song Last Line: But rose-haws and august are glowing red in the sun! Subject(s): Mill Valley, California | ||||||||
The brook is singing a slumber song. Above the water white birches lean, veiling with leaves their bodies' slimness, as maidens hide them in their loosened hair. The pool in their shade is a mirror of burnished bronze, holding their image. White limbs of bathing children gleam from the shadows. Light glows on the green and gold of their garments, swathing them as the green calyx folds the unopened flower. The senses swoon with the cicada's song. Spring, with the sweetness and bloom of the wild-rose, has gone, But rose-haws and August are glowing red in the sun! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...GULLIVER WAKES by ELEANOR PRESTON WATKINS JOHN KEATS (1) by GEORGE GORDON BYRON THE HOUSE OF LIFE: JENNY by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI LOVE'S PHILOSOPHY by PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY FRANCE; THE 18TH YEAR OF THESE STATES by WALT WHITMAN FIRST CYCLE OF LOVE POEMS: 3 by GEORGE BARKER BOAR'S HILL; OCTOBER, 1919 by VERA MARY BRITTAIN JOCHANAN HAKKADOSH: NOTE by ROBERT BROWNING |
