RED SHADOWS, SELECTION, by DONA WAYLAND First Line: Black wraiths, - undulating fiends Last Line: The memory of those scorching -- yellow fangs! Subject(s): Fire | ||||||||
Black wraiths, -- undulating fiends With fiery eyes Peering through the forest into eternity. Superb hate unleashed Advancing through the red shadows Mocking my soul! The trails are closed Sealed in the murk of a tomb. Fire-tipped blades, like hooked fangs Followed by the Chariot of Jagamath Rolling over the land. Trees in flaming silhouette Against the black roof of the world. Spark-filled ashes falling, falling! Elemental forces locked in the blast. Blood-smeared giants toppling into the pit of Asheron. The sound of invisible hoofs and paws of beasts That screach in terror as they rush through the stifling smoke. Sounds -- never to be forgotten! The wind, swung by an invisible hand, Moves the curtain backward. Cosmic laws! -- Life thrown into the abyss And the ashes left to fertilize new seedlings. But -- the terrible devastation, -- The memory of those scorching -- yellow fangs! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WRITTEN TO A YOUNG LADY by MAURICE BARING OUR DRIFTWOOD FIRE by KATHARINE LEE BATES THE NIGHT FIRE by CLAUDE MCKAY WATER, WINTER, FIRE by MARVIN BELL THE LITTLE FIRE IN THE WOODS by HAYDEN CARRUTH SAMSON PREDICTS FROM GAZA THE PHILADELPHIA FIRE by LUCILLE CLIFTON ALADDIN LAMP by MADELINE DEFREES |
