PATENT APPLIED FOR, by                     Poet's Biography

Subject(s): Patents And Trademarks; Repairing; Mending

MY DEAR MR. CARPENTER:
Please call at eight,
All prepared with your tools to mend my front gate.
The latch has been broken. And pray bring with you
Not one latch, but though it seem strange, sir, bring two.
For I have a notion. It's awkward, you know,
Half the time, when you pass through a gateway, to throw
Your arm over the pickets, and fumble around
For the latch, out of sight. And now, sir, I've found
A remedy for this: one latch on each side!
There's a notion worth having! In fact, I've applied
For a patent upon it. Remember, -- at eight,
With your tools, and two latches.
Yours,
J. ADDLE PATE.
