I cannot tell this eager youth The terrors that oppress the old; To tell him all the bitter truth Would make his burning heart grow cold -- The sudden waking in the night, With beating heart and gasping breath, The choking cries, the numbing fright Before the thought of coming death. When face to face, the soul stands bare Before the knowledge, horror bred, That from this life it soon must fare And lie among the moldering dead. To see life go, hear death draw nigh, And know that soon one, too, must die. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND SONNETS ON AGE: 6 by KATHRYN HOWARD WELLS |
