MEDIEVALISM, by MYRTA ALBERTSON WELLS First Line: When heroes were the men of ancient time Last Line: Of regal gems or jealous choked desire. | ||||||||
When heroes were the men of ancient time And blood ran thick to salve a bitter grudge; While children waged a war in pantomime, A jester of the court might be the judge To solve the problems of an angry mob. For men were fools to mount a gilded throne And seek for earthly grandeur, since the throb Of untamed greed may earn a chain and stone. A king's reign hangs upon a slender thread, Ill-wind or pressure, and the dream may crash. They walk upon the brink of hope and dread, Until like glowing meteors they flash And fall through space -- beyond the eager fire Of regal gems or jealous choked desire. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ON CHRISTMAS NIGHT by MYRTA ALBERTSON WELLS THE SHIPWRECK, SELECTION by WILLIAM FALCONER THE VAMPIRE by RUDYARD KIPLING IMMORTALITY [OR, VERSE] by WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR TO THE UNKNOWN EROS: BOOK 1: 8.
