COLOR IN NOVEMBER, by
First Line: The leafless trees their bony structure show
Last Line: King's glory in his ornaments.
Subject(s): November

The leafless trees their bony structure show
And pencil a gaunt loveliness below
The hill. Only one in palest amber
Keeps a delicate reminder
Of leaves that were; while on the hawthorn near
Red berries glow like rubies. Their jewels clear
Might have a name as precious, dear,
As Badakhshan or Burma if they would!

In late November's trembling wood,
When colors are so rare and Autumn's hood
Has lost its green, a solitary jay
Upon a tree may seem a sapphire gay,
And these few amber leaves and berries red,
As precious as things upon a mummy's head,
Carefully unwrapped by those who see the dead
King's glory in his ornaments.
