EVENING ON THE LAKE, by
First Line: In the depths of the sky is the blue of night
Last Line: On the peaceful water's breast.
Subject(s): Peace; Rest

IN the depths of the sky is the blue of night,
But opal and turquoise and sea-shell pink,
Are the clouds that were left at the water's brink
By the sun, in its western flight.

On the purple pier shines a beacon bright,
That besieges the lake—all coppery gold,
Where it lies like a shield that the nixies hold,
With arrows of golden light.

A baby breeze in search of rest,
Playfully toys with the willow's hair,
Then silently nestles, all free from care,
On the peaceful water's breast.
