THE PRAIRIE SPEAKING, by FANNIE BARRIER WILLIAMS Poet's Biography First Line: I am the prairie Last Line: I am the prairie Subject(s): Love; Sea; Tourists; Travel; Ocean; Journeys; Trips | ||||||||
I am the prairie. Once the sea gave me caresses; Once her long weeds were my tresses. Farthest reaches of my spaces Knew the touch of her embraces. Fishes spawned where herds are feeding; Mussels lay where grains are seeding. Sky-flung cliffs now brightly flashing Knew the rage of ocean's dashing. I lie in blissful exultation, I quaff the full of Joy's libation. I have emerged from sea's enfolding; A treasure trove my fields are holding. My far-flung miles in sunshine basking I offer freely for the asking. Where sea monsters used to glide I display myself in pride. Flowers riot in my green, Moonlight lends a mellow sheen. In bride beauty I am dressed, By my lover Sun caressed. Lying in shimmering vastness, entrancing the gaze of beholders, Hinting not primeval chaos, I challenge the gaze of the traveler. Thrilling with beauty unrivalled, exuberant verdure and blossoms, Riot from high butte to margin, embroider the edge of my garments. High mid cerulean splendor is shining the face of my lover Wooing me yet in my beauty as once he wooed me from the darkness.
