Subject(s): Cities; Evening; Urban Life; Sunset; Twilight

The swinging bells engrave in sunset golds
The halos round the heads of poverty:
The ringing tones reveal the gleaming folds
Of glory, the rolled rumors of the sea.
And far off splendour of a life unknown,
Deep as reverberation of flown youth,
Presses the heart of multitudes who moan:
Salvation drips from dark, wet boughs of truth.

Beloved city! flower of the forever!
Honeyed interior of our history!
Some day you'll wake beside this sword of river,
This shield of cloud, and gaze up at the tree
Where the white wind is perched and whence there comes
Faintly, the music of milleniums ......
