THE MILLENNIUM, by IDA TEEPLE WITTENBERGER First Line: The armaments and power of kings Last Line: In chains in deepest hell! Subject(s): Judgment Day; Peace; End Of The World; Doomsday; Fall Of Man | ||||||||
The armaments and power of kings, Desire for wealth and pride, Have torn the world before and since The time our Saviour died. Greece, Rome, and Carthage, not alone, For Babylon came before; Assyria and a host beside Were empires built with gore. Napoleon and Charlemagne, Striving for earthly power, Like Alexander built with arms, And had but a brief hour. Wilhelm and Nicholas in our time Have learned the lesson too That peoples cry aloud to God As czars and kaisers do. Peace! Peace! Descend and reign on earth! How long will you delay? Until the time when Jesus comes And wipes our tears away? God! Give us peace a thousand years When men in love may dwell, And cast grim war with Satan's hosts In chains in deepest hell! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ON ETHNIC DEFINITIONS by ELEANOR WILNER THE MARRIAGE OF HEAVEN AND HELL by WILLIAM BLAKE THE END OF THE WORLD by GORDON BOTTOMLEY 1X1 (ONE TIMES ONE): 20 by EDWARD ESTLIN CUMMINGS ONCE BY THE PACIFIC by ROBERT FROST |
