THE COMMON THINGS, by BARBARA YOUNG First Line: I have a cup of common clay Last Line: Where all green growing things have birth. Subject(s): Simplicity | ||||||||
I have a cup of common clay, And from its depths I drink each day The water of a living dream Drawn from a bright and nameless stream. I have a cloak of common stuff;A faded thing, and coarse and rough; But we have weathered night and storm And kept a heart serene and warm. And with my staff of common wood, A happy pilgrim, I have stood Beside the temple all day long And bought contentment with a song. I go upon a common way, And every night and every day Is full of common peace, and pain, And dew and stars, and dust and rain. And when I die a common death, And close my eyes and yield my breath, Let me lie down in common earth, Where all green growing things have birth. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WANTS OF MAN by JOHN QUINCY ADAMS FIRST BOOK OF AIRS: 20.
