FOLK SONG, by
First Line: What shall I do if love betray
Last Line: And he my own true lover is

WHAT shall I do if love betray?
I cannot rest by night or day.

When I lie down at night to sleep,
I think upon my love and weep.

I rose ere morning from my bed,
Donned my grey gown, and forth I sped.

Unlocked the postern gate, and fast
Into our garden gently past.

And there I heard the nightingale
And skylark sing their loving tale,

Who, in their language sweet and clear,
Said, 'See, my love is coming here.'

Upon the Seine doth gaily float,
Of richest wood, a noble boat.

The ropes and cords of silk are made,
And wide the satin sails displayed.

All ivory is the mast, I trow,
And all of purest gold the prow.

The sailors who the vessel throng
To some far-distant land belong.

The King of France, his son is there,
For crest he doth a lily bear.

Another is the son of --
And he my own true lover is.
