PENAL SERVITUDE FOR MRS. MAYBRICK, by

The Maybrick trial is over now, there's been a lot of jaw,
Of doctors' contradiction, and expounding of the law;
She had Sir Charles Russell to defend her as we know,
But though he tried his very best it all turned out no go.

Chorus

But Mrs. Maybrick will not have to climb the golden stairs;
The Jury found her guilty so she nearly said her prayers;
She's at another kind of mashing and at it she must stop,
Old Berry is took down a peg with his big long drop.

Now the doctors at the trial had a very gay old time,
They all told different stories about this cruel crime;
Some said that Mr. Maybrick to death had dosed himself,
While others said it was his wife that put him on the shelf.

Then came the servants' story how the flypapers were found,
In fact it seems the missis had arsenic all around,
In food and drink of every kind, in cupboard and in box,
In handkerchiefs, and even in the pockets of her frocks.

Next came the waiter's story about her trip to town,
Which proved that from the virtue of a woman she had fell down,
And when a woman like her from her husband goes astray,
It plainly shows she wishes that he was out of the way.

Then came the fatal letter that fairly cooked her goose,
It seemed to say to Brierly that she would soon be loose;
And though she made a statement to explain it all away,
The Jury wouldn't have it, she the penalty must pay.

Then to each gay and flirty wife may this a warning be,
Don't write to any other man or sit upon his knee;
When once you start like Mrs. Maybrick perhaps you couldn't stop,
So stick close to your husband and keep clear of Berry's drop.
