THE PRINCESS ROYAL'S DOWRY, by ANONYMOUS First Line: Now is not this a piece of work Last Line: "the marrow from our bones, sir" Subject(s): Courts & Courtiers;taxes | ||||||||
Now is not this a piece of work And pretty botheration, Our Princess Royal has got a man Without any hesitation; And a wedding portion she has got, But how much? the people axes, Forty thousand pounds at once she got, Likewise eight thousand yearly, The people will be taxed to pay To the Princess Royal dearly. Lord Palmerston he did declare He'd quickly tax the nation To support the Princess Royal In her proper rank and station. They'll tax the deaf, the lame, the blind, To help to pay expenses; With a double tax on all the girls That's flounced up to the hainches. * * * They're going to tax the farmer lads That harrows, ploughs, and ditches, They'll lay a tax on powdered wigs, And all the livery breeches, They'll tax us all, both old and young, To support these idle drones, sir, That does nothing else but suck The marrow from our bones, sir. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TO MY DOG, JOWLER by JONATHAN DORR BRADLEY EPOGRAM; LINES WRITTEN ON A WINDOW AT THE KING'S ARMS, DUMFRIES by ROBERT BURNS THE INVENTORY, IN ANSWER TO ...
