WRESTLING MATCH BETWEEN JACKSON AND ATKINSON, by ANONYMOUS First Line: Come all you sporting heroes bold and listen to my song Last Line: "he threw him three times out of four, and bore the prize away" Subject(s): Wrestling & Wrestlers | |||
Come all you sporting heroes bold and listen to my song, I will tell you of a wrestling Match, and will not keep you long, Between Atkinson and Jackson, the truth I will unfold, For the Championship of England, and three hundred pounds in gold. Chorus Atkinson proved the champion as I have heard them say, For he has thrown brave Jackson, and borne the prize away. On the 8th day of October, as I have heard them say, Some thousands went to see the match, all on that very day, From Whitehaven and Penrith, and Carlisle too likewise, And some they came from Newcastle to see who'd win the prize. Jackson wrestled 13 stone 10, the truth I'm going to state, While Atkinson wrestled 18 stone 2, what a difference in their weight, But Atkinson stood like a post, and would not show no play, By which he threw brave Jackson, and bore the prize away. Although brave Jackson lost the prize I will not run him down, He has been as good a wrestler as ever yet was found, And for the deeds that he has done, his praises we will sing, He won the prize for four years running, all in the Carlisle ring. He won his match with Nichol, as I will now unfold, Likewise his match with Longmire for fifty pounds in gold, But Atkinson has done him out, as I have heard them say, He threw him three times out of four, and bore the prize away. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE WRESTLERS by WILLIAM ROSE BENET WRESTLING by LOUISA SARAH BEVINGTON THE BOUT by EVARISTE BOULAY-PATY TIS A LITTLE JOURNEY by ANONYMOUS "'TIS MIDNIGHT, AND THE SETTING SUN" by ANONYMOUS "'TWAS ROLLOG, AND THE MINIM POTES" by ANONYMOUS 1648 : FOR COSSACKS by ANONYMOUS A CHERRY YEAR / A MERRY YEAR by ANONYMOUS A COMET FROM THE RHYMERS' CLUB AFAR by ANONYMOUS |
