TRICKED by MAX ENDICOFF

First Line: WE WALKED ALONG THE AVENUE ARM IN ARM- / AND I
Last Line: TO ADMIRE A HAT.
Subject(s): MEMORY;

We walked along the Avenue arm in arm—
And I,
Who hoarded the beauty wrenched from life,
(Giving nought in return but sneers of mockery),
I, in a moment of wanton recklessness,
Opened wide the doors of this prized store-house
Filled with memories
That are like priceless jewels
Torn from the earth with crushed and bleeding fingers.
She smiled gently, pressed my arm in sympathy,
And stopped before a garish shop-window
To admire a hat.
