Trains whistling in the night, Rumbling and rushing through the darkness To far away places, Shrill, sharp whistles of freight trains Pushed and pulled by puffing engines That noisily jerk their ponderous loads Up and down the mountains of our land, Around the curves of lakes and valleys And over the vast, flat western plains, Carrying all sorts of things to widely separated peoples. Trains whistling in the night, Long, low whistles. Cattle trains, with mute and anguished eyes Peering pitifully into the blackness. Mail trains bearing messages of heavy import To hearts already burdened -- Messages of love and happiness To homes where hope had died. Passenger trains, smoothly speeding their human freight To destinations, sometimes unexpected. Trains, whistling, moving through the night, Moving steadily through the darkness. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOE HILL LISTENS TO THE PRAYING by KENNETH PATCHEN MARRIAGE by MARY ELIZABETH COLERIDGE THE CONGO by NICHOLAS VACHEL LINDSAY SHE IS FAR FROM THE LAND by THOMAS MOORE CA' THE YOWES TO THE KNOWES' by ISOBEL (ISABEL) PAGAN ONE SHORT HOUR by RICHARD CHENEVIX TRENCH ST.
