THE ELMS ARE FLOWERING by JOYCE GRENFELL

First Line: THE ELMS ARE FLOWERING IN A ROSY CLOUD
Last Line: STAND LOOK AND SENSE FULFILMENT BEING BORN.
Subject(s): ELM TREES;

The elms are flowering in a rosy cloud,
A sudden transient blossoming, soon past,
The one fair moment in a stern tree's year
Before its ebon bones are overcast.
High in the fragile feathery branches
Rooks are building thick, untidy nests,
A sooty architecture, old as time,
Beyond the reach of uninvited guests.
Feel the damp wind that lightly passes by;
Smell the damp earth and mark the beaded thorn
That runs above the footpath's narrow cut.
Stand look and sense fulfilment being born.
