BALLAD by MARGARET GROSVENOR

First Line: LOVE MET SORROW ON THE ROAD
Last Line: LOVE HAD GROWN A MAN.
Subject(s): GRIEF; LOVE; SORROW; SADNESS;

Love met Sorrow on the road
And joined his step to hers,
Asked: 'Why should we walk apart,
Two lonely travellers?'

Love was but a slender boy,
Sorrow bent and old.
'Whoever walks with me,' she said,
'Must be very bold!'

Love cried smiling: 'Everything
But loneliness I dare.
What our journey brings to us,
Sorrow, we will share.'

When together hand in hand
Their pilgrimage began,
Sorrow had the step of youth,
Love had grown a man.
