SOLITUDE by GERTRUDE B. GUNDERSON

First Line: I SEARCHED A MOUNTAIN TOP FOR SOLITUDE
Last Line: IS WHERE I FOUND MY UTTER SOLITUDE.
Subject(s): SELF; SILENCE; SOLITUDE; LONELINESS;

I searched a mountain top for solitude
And quiet self-communion; far and wide
The thoughts of men invade—which always brood
Along horizons of the country side.
I sought the prairie spaces where I found
Familiar loneliness; but there the grass
But whispers its small worries to the ground;
And winds wail all earth's sorrow as they pass.
For respite, I explored a busy street,
In all the madding turmoil of the crowd—
Where there were only strangers I could meet—
Indifference wrapped round me as a cloud.
Where shadows of self-interest, only, brood
Is where I found my utter solitude.
