I searched a mountain top for solitude And quiet self-communion; far and wide The thoughts of men invadewhich always brood Along horizons of the country side. I sought the prairie spaces where I found Familiar loneliness; but there the grass But whispers its small worries to the ground; And winds wail all earth's sorrow as they pass. For respite, I explored a busy street, In all the madding turmoil of the crowd Where there were only strangers I could meet Indifference wrapped round me as a cloud. Where shadows of self-interest, only, brood Is where I found my utter solitude. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UPON HIS DEPARTURE HENCE by ROBERT HERRICK AGE IN YOUTH by TRUMBULL STICKNEY THE COTTON BOLL by HENRY TIMROD THE ADORATION OF DISK BY KING AKHNATEN AND PRINCESS NEFER NEFERIU ATEN by AKHENATEN BROKEN MUSIC by THOMAS BAILEY ALDRICH |
