CHANSON D'OR by ANN HAMILTON (1902-)

First Line: I SHALL HAVE A GOLD ROOM
Last Line: WITH A GOLD SWORD.
Subject(s): COURTS & COURTIERS; SLAVERY; ROYAL COURT LIFE; ROYALTY; KINGS; QUEENS; SERFS;

I shall have a gold room
When I am a queen,
With a poppy-perfume
And a jewelled screen;

You may come and see me
Any time you will
If you wear a green coat
And a gold frill;

I shall keep a black slave
Hidden in the wall,
Waiting to admit you
When you come to call,

And if you displease me
So that I am bored,
I will have him kill you
With a gold sword.
