WHY should we grieve? The skies above are fair; The hills lie green and golden in the sun; About our feet the rippling waters run; A thousand perfumes load the pleasant air. All things are bright and beautiful and glad -- Why, then, should we be sad? Is there a need that we should turn aside From those sweet springs of happiness and rest, And to the burden of a troubled breast Tie the free thoughts that might be roaming wide? Our hearts are founts of error and of sin -- Why chain our sight within? Darkness and doubt are dreams that pass away, Beyond the cloud that wraps the lives of men, And hides the vast unknown from human ken, The great sun shineth in eternal day.
