A TREE by A. HARRISON

First Line: I SHOULD GO WALKING OFTEN IF I COULD
Last Line: WHERE YOU MAY PIERCE ME CLEAR UP TO MY HEART!
Subject(s): SONNET (AS LITERARY FORM);

I should go walking often if I could
Get to the distance where I saw that tree—
Its pure aloofness made me think of me!—
Standing apart from all the other wood.
And it was lovely in its scarlet hood
Of leaves! The bold wind blew them off to see
The widespread limbs that moved in ecstasy
As he explored between them where they stood.
Just as that tree, because I stand alone
In your strong love, I spread myself apart.
From off me all the covering you have blown;
My limbs are naked, yet I bid you start
Into the opening only you have known
Where you may pierce me clear up to my heart!
