ON WINE by HESIOD

First Line: WINE CHEERS OUR HEARTS, AND MAKES US GLAD
Last Line: TILL WE OUR FREEDOM GET BY SLEEP.
Subject(s): DRINKS & DRINKING; WINE;

WINE cheers our hearts, and makes us glad,
When Grief and Cares have left us sad:
But more than Nature does suffice,
Will cast a cloud before our eyes;

'Twill bind the tongue, the feet, and hands,
Ere we perceive, with strongest bands;
And us its drunken slaves will keep,
Till we our freedom get by Sleep.
