AFTER THE HOLIDAYS by ELIAZBETH GUION HESS

First Line: A GARBAGE WAGON, ROLLING / ALONG SNOWY ...
Last Line: AND SMELL AND FEEL?
Subject(s): HOMELESS;

A garbage wagon, rolling
Along the snowy streets;
(A man forlorn and ragged,
On the driver's seat)
Bearing the refuse
Of a city's feast.
A green lettuce leaf,
A red holly wreath,
Broken dolls beneath
Some toys; a Christmas card --
Three wise men from the East,
Potato parings
And a poet's lines;
Coffee grounds and Christmas rhymes.

What of the man who
Is at the wheel? --
Can he not think,
And smell and feel?
