SOLITUDE IN THE HILLS by KEN HUGHES

First Line: I LIVE ON A WINDY HILL
Last Line: THAN MAN HAS KNOWN.
Subject(s): SOLITUDE; LONELINESS;

I live on a windy hill
Under the pointed fire of stars.
Alone, in the intimate darkness
Of my cabin
Smoke veils the ruby logs,
And the long hound curls
In half circle at my feet;
I drink from the well of silence;
The cool water cleanses
The mouth of my soul --
And the drying tongue of the heart
Grooves words more clear
Than man has known.
