AFTER THE RAIN by HELEN HAYS HUTTON

First Line: SILVER SHADOWS ON A CLEAN BLUE SKY
Last Line: THAT GOD MIRRORED HEAVEN IN THIS GUTTER POOL?
Subject(s): RAIN;

Silver shadows on a clean blue sky
Tinge with saffron when the rain is by;
Poised aloft on a gleaming wing
Drifts a bird, like a sail a-fling;
Lacy leaves on a rain-washed bough
Etch their pattern; I wonder, now,
Was it only by chance or by some fast rule
That God mirrored Heaven in this gutter pool?
