DISILLUSION by HELEN HAYS HUTTON

First Line: I WATCHED A MOON-DRENCHED WAVE ROLL IN
Last Line: AND CRUSHED THE WINGS APART.
Subject(s): DISILLUSION;

I watched a moon-drenched wave roll in
Festooned with silver lace
To tear itself in ragged bits
Upon a cliff's rough face;

I heard the whisper of a wind
Breathe through a restless pine,
Rise to a roaring ecstasy
And die ——— a moaning whine;

I held a fragile, gauze-winged dream
Imprisoned in my heart
Until Life found its hiding place
And crushed the wings apart.
