A MOTHER'S HOPES by BURGES JOHNSON

First Line: SOMETIMES MY MOTHER CONFESSES
Last Line: THE THINGS THEY WILL DO WHEN THEY GROW.
Subject(s): CHILDREN; DAUGHTERS; DOLLS; MOTHERS; SEWING; TOYS; CHILDHOOD;

Sometimes my mother confesses,
If she smiles when she's making my clo'se,
That she's sewing fond hopes in my dresses,
And weaving sweet dreams as she sews.

And so, when I'm stitching and mending,
And all my doll's dresses I sew,
I smile to myself while pretending
The things they will do when they grow.
