PALLAS GOES IN GRAY by MINNIE FAEGRE KNOX

First Line: ONCE I KNEW
Last Line: I CAN NEVER BE GLAD.
Subject(s): LIFE;

Once I knew
That white was white,
And black was black.
Then—Life was as gay
As the flowering broom:
And my heart was light.
Or—Life was somber
As the sealed-up tomb:
In my heart was night.

Now I know
That black is gray ...
Silvery-pearl, twilight cloud:
I need never be sad.
And I know
That white is gray ...
Smoke-drab pearl, misty shroud:
I can never be glad.
