In the shadow of a tomb Where in homage men have filed, Under sod is one at rest Called "An Amiable Child." Voices hushed, in solemn mien, Mortals guard a nation's shrine, But the boy is sentineled In the whispering trees' confine. In his grill-enclosured grave Lies sweet innocence at rest, In the marbled sepulchre Is reposed a medalled breast. And though manhood brought the man To a death-defying fame, Yet how good it is to know That the lad is free from blame.
