She stood within the gleaming gates of pearl, Her worn out shoes upon a golden street; A frightened, ragged, wide-eyed little girl No winged, shining angel came to meet. A blinding, white light down upon her beat To mock each tattered rent and unkempt curl. She saw far vistas of high mansions fair, A throne of glory, and a crystal sea. Then by her side One stood and touched her hair And said: "O little lamb, come unto me!" A start, a look of terror, then the child Ran screaming from the One she did not know, And through wide heaven rang her pleading wild: "Let me go back!
