A PAUPER ENTERS HEAVEN by EDWIN CARLILE LITSEY

First Line: SHE STOOD WITHIN THE GLEAMING GATES OF PEARL
Last Line: "LET ME GO BACK! OH, GOD, PLEASE LET ME GO!"
Subject(s): HEAVEN; PARADISE;

She stood within the gleaming gates of pearl,
Her worn out shoes upon a golden street;
A frightened, ragged, wide-eyed little girl
No winged, shining angel came to meet.
A blinding, white light down upon her beat
To mock each tattered rent and unkempt curl.
She saw far vistas of high mansions fair,
A throne of glory, and a crystal sea.
Then by her side One stood and touched her hair
And said: "O little lamb, come unto me!"
A start, a look of terror, then the child
Ran screaming from the One she did not know,
And through wide heaven rang her pleading wild:
"Let me go back! Oh, God, please let me go!"
