ANOTHER SLEEP by C. ALBERT LOUGHTON

First Line: IT WAS ALMOST SPRING TODAY
Last Line: WHILE THEY HAVE ANOTHER SLEEP.
Subject(s): WINTER;

It was almost spring today --
For I heard
Spring, as a jaunty bird
With a breast of rusty red
Sang with a tilted head.

And I saw
The sun grow warm and draw
Into the light a blade
From sleep in winter's shade.

But a boy
Came with his Christmas toy
And left the bird of red
Silenced with rigid head.

Then came a gust
To whirl away the dust,
And the clouds drew near to place
A cloth of starry lace.

It was almost spring today --
But now the blade
And the bird in the glade
Are in God's watchful keep
While they have another sleep.
