APPREHENSION by WINIFRED LUCAS

First Line: WITH WHAT RESERVE OF HELPLESS FEAR
Last Line: OR DAWN OF HIS BE HERALDING.
Subject(s): FEAR; TIME;

WITH what reserve of helpless fear,
With falseness how resigned,
Time whispers at your tender ear
His promise to be kind;
To guard you as he cannot do
Life bids him swear to such as you.

For Time is more than half afraid
To have you for his child,
Sweet thing that asks a rarer shade,
A sun more soft and mild,
Than night of his can ever bring,
Or dawn of his be heralding.
