WAKING by WINIFRED LUCAS

First Line: WHITHER THROUGH THE MORNING FLED
Last Line: SEEK TO INFLUENCE—OR DEFEAT?
Subject(s): SLEEP; WAKING;

WHITHER through the morning fled
Sleep your friend?
Little, fair, forsaken head,
Heavy with the parting said!—
Did he linger?—Or, instead,
Break a dream before the end?

And to-night, the stars among,
At the sweet
First note of the cradle-song
Will he stir,—or listen long?—
Lightly touch—or clasp thee strong?
Seek to influence—or defeat?
