"The Spring is come to Nazareth
And swift the Summer hurrieth."
@3Sing low, the barley and the corn!@1

Across the field a path is set—
@3Sing, sweet Mary,@1
Green shadow in a golden net—
The tears of night have left it wet.
@3Sing low, the barley and the corn!@1

The Babe forsakes His mother's knee,
@3Haste, sweet Mary—@1
See how He runneth merrily,
One foot upon the path hath He—
@3Green, green, the barley and the corn!@1

The mother calls with mother-fear—
@3Hush, sweet Mary!@1
Another sound is in His ear,
A sound he cannot choose but hear—
@3Hush, hush, the barley and the corn!@1

Far and still far—through years yet dim
@3List, sweet Mary!@1
From o'er the waking earth's green rim
Another Springtime calleth Him!
@3Bend low, the barley and the corn!@1

Call low, call high, and call again,
@3Ah, poor Mary!@1
Know, by thy heart's prophetic pain,
That one day thou shalt call in vain—
@3Moan, moan, the barley and the corn!@1

O mother! make thine arms a shield,
@3Sing, sweet Mary!@1
While love still holds what love must yield
Hide well the path across the field!—
@3Sing low, the barley and the corn!@1

"The Spring is come!" a shepherd saith;
@3Rest thee, Mary—@1
The passing years are but a breath
And Spring still comes to Nazareth—
@3Green, green, the barley and the corn!@1
