THE LION OF LUCERNE by FREDERIC ROWLAND MARVIN

First Line: WITH EQUAL COURAGE SOLDIER AND COMMANDER FELL
Last Line: IF RANK AND TITLE, CROWNED WITH GLORY, LIVE.
Subject(s): GRATITUDE; HONOR; MEMORY; SOLDIERS;

WITH equal courage soldier and commander fell;
Why were not all recorded name by name?
The stone was ample, and the artist's skill was there,
To give them, great and small, to deathless fame.

Alas, how meagre is the gratitude we yield
To humble men who royal service give!
We little care that silent worth unhonored die,
If rank and title, crowned with glory, live.
