A TULIP IN A VASE by NELL MAYNARD

First Line: DID YOU EVER
Last Line: WITHIN YOUR HAND!
Subject(s): TULIPS;

Did you ever
Watch a tulip in a vase?
How it holds up
Its quaint, beseeching face
Asking you to
Return it to its place
Within the earth?
Be careful now
Cruel, unheeding one,
Can't you hear how
It pleads in vain for sun
And cooling rain
Upon its bleeding brow?
You, heartless one,
You with the rough, hot hands
That crush the life
From small, life-giving veins
Unfeelingly;
You with unseeing eyes,
Can't you even hear
Those low, bemoaning cries?
Hear -- understand?
The soul of an angel lies
Within your hand!
