BELIEVERS by CLYDE MCGEE

First Line: I HEARD ONE TALKING YESTERDAY OF GOD!
Last Line: HELP THOU OUR UNBELIEF!
Subject(s): FAITH; GOD; RELIGION; BELIEF; CREED; THEOLOGY;

I heard one talking yesterday of God!
He spoke so familiarly of Him—
Might have called Him "Jim" or "Charlie,"
Like the ward boss or corner groceryman,
He knew Him full as well—
His schemes and plans,
His ways and purposes,
The "when" and "why" and "wherefore" of all His acts,
From beginning to the end ...
"Such knowledge was divine," he said,
"Had been revealed,"
"By sign and miracle approved,"
"To doubt or question would give offence to God ..."
"What perfect faith he has," said some.

O Thou creative Soul of all that is,
Too great for us to picture or define,
Who proved by miracle, art made more doubtful still
Must we be charged with sin of unbelief?

We dare not claim such knowledge of Thy will,
We do not know Thy final purposes,
Nor have we answer to the crushed heart's "why?"
We walk dark roads in trust,
And down the long ages
Trace tendencies and trends,
And follow faithfully as we may
The fitful gleams
The watchful eye discerns.
Condemn us not,
We see as in a mirror darkly,
We trust and seek—
Help Thou our unbelief!
