For humble souls who bravely bear Life's pain, its wounds, its weight of care, Defeat of hopes, and secret tears, And fates dark hid within the years, Who trust the good so long delayed, And breast the darkness unafraid; Who midst the passionate rule of hate But love the more and patient wait; Who conquer Death anew each day, Brave comrades of the common way, 'Tis these that move me now to pray, Though only this my lips can say, "I thank Thee, Lord!" They of the contrite heart and pure! Their love and gentleness endure! Their tombs are doubly sealed in vain, They walk the roads of life again! I have no labored proofs to give, Save in my heart I know they live! And through the dark there shines for me The Light of Immortality; I thank Thee, Lord! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: LYMAN KING by EDGAR LEE MASTERS CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOON by HAYDEN CARRUTH THE LITANY OF THE DARK PEOPLE by COUNTEE CULLEN SMALL COUNTRIES by JAMES GALVIN AQUATINT FRAMED IN GOLD by AMY LOWELL CAMOMILE TEA by KATHERINE MANSFIELD DOMESDAY BOOK: JOHN SCOFIELD by EDGAR LEE MASTERS SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: PENNIWIT, THE ARTIST by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
