I CAME at sunset to the lotus pond, I told them I loved the lotus flowers; That I wanted to see the last rays of the sun Strike across the pink buds. I knew that he loved the lotus pond; I thought he might walk there at sunset. He came; a woman was with him. He loved her. By the light in his eyes I knew that; And by the tone of his voice, As he spoke to her of the lotus buds. Now I speak the truth when I say That I love the lotus buds. One may grow out of my heart, And may give him joy in passing; Perhaps he may even stoop to pluck it, For I shall lie near the shore Beneath the water of the lotus pond, And shall gather the roots of the lotus buds close about my heart. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE GOLDEN CORPSE by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET CONTRA MORTEM: THE FALL by HAYDEN CARRUTH TO BAYARD TAYLOR by SIDNEY LANIER THE ROAD TO AVIGNON by AMY LOWELL TO TWO UNKNOWN LADIES by AMY LOWELL THE PLACE OF PEACE by EDWIN MARKHAM DOMESDAY BOOK: CONSIDER FREELAND by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
