SILENCE by MARCELLA DARLING MILBURN

First Line: THE FLOODING, BLACK SILENCE OF THE NIGHT
Last Line: IN THE STREETS OUTSIDE.
Subject(s): SILENCE; THOUGHT; THINKING;

The flooding, black silence of the night
Surges into my ears,
And goes rumbling through my consciousness,
Driving away the pretty thoughts
That I would have
Before I go to sleep—
The hazy, lovely-colored, fairy thoughts
Of flowers and gardens bright
And evening songs—
Leaving a tightening fear
Of gloomy, clouded seas
Holding ill-fated ships;
Of blackening, roaring forests;
And of stealthy shadows
In the streets outside.
