MAY NIGHT by BEATRICE PAYNE MORGAN

First Line: SO STILL THE TREE STANDS IN THE NIGHT
Last Line: SO STILL.
Subject(s): NIGHT; BEDTIME;

So still the tree stands in the night,
Its quivering silence seems to fill
The earth that lies in the moon's light
So still!

How sweet the blossoming tree! The spill
Of silken petals, drifting, white,
Patches with snow the shadowy hill.

What immemorial, secret rite
Holds the fields mute? What darkling thrill?
For Ishtar waits the earth tonight
So still.
