PROMISE by VIRGINIA KEATING ORTON

First Line: WE LAUGHED TOGETHER IN THE QUIET GLADE
Last Line: AND TRIED TO FRESHEN IT WITH TEARS.
Subject(s): GRIEF; SORROW; SADNESS;

We laughed together in the quiet glade.
You said no other voice would ever make
Rich music in your ears.
I thought of that today
When in my hand I held a blade
Of dried and twisted summer grass,
And tried to freshen it with tears.
