ONCE, only once, and long ago, One moment which the angels know, -- They keep it in their calendar, Which calls the sun-lit earth a star, -- One moment, once, my Flora's eye Met mine with maiden motion shy, And one large look, all armed with truth And curious candour, judged my youth, And said, 'As plain as eyes can see, I see your soul as you see me;' Her open eyes were like the beach Where brown with white, each lighting each, Lie mixed, or like the brown bright sand, Where bright surf hurries to the land. THE truth is male, and females shy Come near it with a careful lie. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CARGO MOVING TO GAZA (1988) by MARVIN BELL OMNIPRESENCE by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON GUNS AS KEYS: AND THE GREAT GATE SWINGS by AMY LOWELL SONG FOR A VIOLA D'AMORE by AMY LOWELL SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: MRS.
