JAKE DAUBERT by WILLIAM A. PHELON

First Line: NO FINER PLAYER EVER FLASHED THE SPIKES
Last Line: AND WAVED HIM OUTWARD THROUGH THE UNKNOWN GATE!
Subject(s): ATHLETES; BASEBALL; DAUBERT, JAKE (1884-1924); DEATH; SPORTS; DEAD, THE;

(@3Death is something no one yearns to meet—but isn't it great, when the
time comes, to go out as Jake Daubert did, with whole cities mourning for him
and never an enemy on the earth?@1)

NO FINER player ever flashed the spikes,
No better athlete ever played the game,
And—such the tribute of the baseball world—
No player ever had a cleaner name.

He gave The Game all that he had—his best—
From eager boyhood into middle age,
And the proud records of his life and deeds
In baseball annals fill a glorious page!

Truest of sportsmen, on the field and off,
He starred and sparkled till relentless Fate,
The Master of the Umpires, raised his hand
And waved him outward through the Unknown Gate!
