LOVE SONNET OF A TRACK FIEND by WILLIAM A. PHELON

First Line: BABY, I KNOW YOU THINK THAT I
Last Line: I'LL MAKE THE REST LOOK JUST LIKE ALSO-RANS!
Subject(s): GAMBLING; HORSE RACING; TRACK ATHLETICS; WAGERING; BETTING; RUNNING RACES; POLE VAULTING; DISCUS THROWING; SHOT PUTTING; RUNNING HURDLES;

BABY, I know you think that I
Am just a fish—a mackerel or trout,
Or a plain sucker, to be hooked and gaffed
By any wise guy, or a common tout—
Maybe I am—but when it comes to love,
I am a whizbang and a turtle-dove!

Baby, I know I've made some foolish bets,
But those were made when I had just seen you,
And I was @3dazed@1 and @3dizzy@1—didn't know
Whether the jocks wore purple or light blue!
Believe me, Babe, this mark, this easy sinner,
When he saw you, knew he had picked a winner!

I know you think the horse game is the bunk,
But listen: What is life, except a race,
Where fastest favorites put on their stuff,
To settle just this—win, and show, and place?
I tell you, Babe, stand for the wedding banns,
I'll make the rest look just like also-rans!
