RADIO WONDERS by WILLIAM A. PHELON

First Line: THE SACKS WERE FULL, THE BABE WAS UP--
Last Line: BE PLANTED OUT IN MARS!
Subject(s): BASEBALL; RUTH, GEORGE HERMAN (BABE) (1895-1948); SPORTS;

THE sacks were full, the Babe was up—
The anxious myriads heard
The story of his glorious deeds—
The radio buzzed and whirred.
"The pitcher shoots a speedy curve—
The Babe is set to swing—
Now, children, bed-time story's here—
Buzz, zizzco, zam, jam, zing!"
The ticker says a strike was called,
And, breathless, one and all,
We wait upon the heavy fate
That guides the next pitched ball!
"The pitcher's winding up, and now
He hurls with mighty speed—
The dry cause, brothers, well enforced,
Will meet the nation's need———"
With maddened shrieks, the waiting throng
Break for their various cars—
The radio might just as well
Be planted out in Mars!
