THE MYSTERY by WILLIAM A. PHELON

First Line: WHENCE AND WHITHER, HOW AND WHY?
Last Line: LINGERS LUCK, OR HURRIES BY?
Subject(s): LUCK;

WHENCE and whither, how and why?
Lingers luck, or hurries by—
One wild day, a victor's crown—
Next day, stopped and out and down!
A winning horse, a lucky blow—
A misjudged lead, a track that's slow—
Frantic beat of clapping hands,
Or derision from the stands—
A home run drive—a needed ace—
A fumble with three men on base—
Through the line and straight across—
A check, and tumbled for a loss—
Whence and whither, how and why,
Lingers luck, or hurries by?
